Seminar
Körper und Geschlecht in der Frühen Neuzeit
Daniela Hacke
Comments
The seminar aims to convey the basics of body and gender history in the early modern period and critically discuss current concepts of masculinity/femininity. In contrast to modernity, concepts of the body and gender in the early modern period were constructed in a binary and heteronomous way and were by no means fluid and ambiguous. This basic premise will be examined using the medical and theological gender and body images of the time, which have been handed down not only in texts, but also in visual and material sources (engravings, wax models). The discourse in the early modern period is predominantly male-dominated; nevertheless, women's self-perception of the functioning of the female body and the specific gender images will also be addressed. close
