China's diplomacy in the Global South

China has increasingly focused its diplomatic efforts on strengthening ties with the Global South, where it not only identifies as a member but also seeks to position itself as a leading voice. Many countries in the Global South share China’s critiques of the existing international order and have become more vocal in calling for its reform. As shifts in the global balance of power continue, these countries are likely to play an increasingly influential role in international affairs. Understanding China’s approach to its relations with the Global South is therefore essential for analysing broader geopolitical trends. This seminar examines China’s evolving foreign policy and strategic narratives toward the Global South from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Key areas of focus include China’s engagement in multilateral institutions such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), its public and cultural diplomacy in Africa and corresponding African responses, and its interactions with Global South countries within the United Nations. To provide the necessary analytical tools, the seminar begins with a theoretical introduction to international relations (IR) and diplomacy studies. Students are expected to actively participate in discussions and deliver a presentation. The course will be conducted in English, with occasional use of Chinese-language resources. close
