Seminar
The "Third World" and the Cold War
Marius Huber
Comments
The history of the "Third World" in the context of the Cold War is a dynamic field of research that has gained increasing attention in recent years. Based on Odd Arne Westad’s groundbreak-ing work The Global Cold War, actors, locations, and themes that were previously mere foot-notes in Cold War historiography have come into focus. Westad argues that the Cold War can only be fully understood in the light of the colonial experience. Therefore, this seminar focuses on the relationship between decolonization and the Cold War. The sessions follow regional focal points in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America and address overarching issues such as the Non-Alignment Movement, anti-imperialism, and international solidarity movements. Through selected case studies, we will examine key questions of this broad research field, with a particular emphasis on working with diverse source materials and making them use-ful for academic work. Participants are expected to engage in intensive reading of English-language texts and submit weekly written responses to discussion questions. close
