Science and Politics in Berlin, 1871–1945

The scientific hub of Berlin, with five public universities, over 40 colleges, and more than 70 non-university research institutions, is among the largest in Europe. Over 40 Nobel laureates have researched and taught here. Even during the imperial era, Berlin was regarded as a center of scientific excellence – and at the same time, a place of close interconnection between science and politics. In the "Age of Extremes" (Eric Hobsbawm), the independence of science was repeatedly called into question. This seminar examines the relationship between "science and politics as resources for one another" (Mitchell G. Ash) through selected case studies from various disciplines. For the period between 1871 and 1945, the seminar will investigate, on the one hand, the impact of political system changes on the German scientific system. On the other hand, it will explore how scientists influenced political decisions and which actors can be considered "border-crossers" between science and politics. close
