(Global) Health and Mobility

When attempts to contain Covid-19 pandemic brought sudden disruptions to most movements globally, certain connections between (im)mobility and global health became tangible in our everyday lives. But intersections of mobility, health and well-being are by far not limited to spreading pathogens and pandemics, and mobility is more than a “problem” for global health. In this seminar we will attempt to entangle some aspects of mobility and health, and how they are shaping and shaped by global power structures and inequalities. We will talk about how peoples’ mobilities influence health and access to health care in various ways, as for example in the case of mobile workers, migrant health care workers or medical tourists. Furthermore, we will discuss the (political) economies shaping the circulation of pharmaceuticals, technologies and ideas about health and well-being, which inspire hope for cures, but also reinforce the extraction of resources and local knowledges for capitalist wealth accumulation. We will also engage with questions around the mobility of pathogens and its connection to climate change and more-than-human health. Lastly, we will interrogate what it means to conduct ethnographic fieldwork on mobility and health, as the mobility of people, things or ideas challenges certain assumptions about “the field” as a distinct physical place, and requires us to rethink our modes of ethnographic engagement. close
