Introduction to the Anthropology of Religion
Omar Kasmani
Comments
This course serves as a critical-intersectional introduction to the anthropology of religion. We begin with a discussion of some of the key concepts and categories within the discipline. Over the course of the semester, we explore the gendered, material and affective approaches to religious experience and practice. Through readings and discussion, we think about religion across its otherworldly and everyday aspects and simultaneously gain a sense of how it can be approached ethnographically. We close with the discipline’s postcolonial moment, discuss its contemporary troubles so as to reflect on what is termed as classical or canonical from a critical perspective. Structured around 5 topical sections, the reading plan will reflect the course’s interest in a range of cultural and disciplinary takes that make religion a worthwhile object of study while keeping close at hand queer-feminist, decolonial and Global South perspectives. close
