Seminar
Journalism in Exile
Anna Litvinenko
Comments
Amid escalating global conflicts, journalism has become one of the most perilous professions, as press freedom continues to erode worldwide. This leads to many journalists leaving their home countries in pursuit of security. Yet, how can journalism be performed abroad without direct access to the target audience, in a different language and cultural environment and under new legal and political conditions? How do journalistic role perceptions change? How can media work be sustainable and how can journalism in exile be supported in a meaningful way? Despite the global rise of exile journalism, so far, there is limited empirical research on this phenomenon. This seminar aims to answer the above raised questions and will provide comprehensive insights into the topic by inputs from external guests (including exiled journalists), guided student team work in various interactive formats (including workshops, world cafés and mappings) and relying on first-hand data from a research project. close
