The Qur’an contains a large number of parables (amthal, sing. mathal) on various subjects as well as explaining in a self-reflective way how these should be understood. Therefore the parable also plays a prominent role in Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir). Readings will include parables and their discussion within the Qur’an as well as exegetical works touching upon the aspect. close
