Knowledge politics and economy of conflict and violence
Conflict and violence are among the key structuring modes of international politics. However, what we know about them differs and is strongly influenced by how we know conflict and violence. Ways of knowing violence and conflict differ among everyday observers, experts, as well as academics. For the purpose of illustration, we can roughly distinguish these ways of knowing, although they of course overlap in practice: While everyday observers may know conflict and violence from firsthand experiences or through the media, experts employ specific techniques to do so, while academics also work with theories to produce knowledge. As researchers we can investigate and scrutinize all these different ways of knowing conflict and violence, and analyse the politics, as well as economic conditions that influence them. In this project seminar, students will familiarize themselves with a range of mostly qualitative methods (field-based and non-field-based) to develop their own research projects concerning questions on the knowledge politics and economy of conflict and violence. close
