War and Gender: Feminist Perspectives on Violence, Power and Resistance
Niklas Balbon
Comments
What if war is more than just a clash over territory or resources, but actually “the continuation of patriarchy with other means”? In this course, we’ll uncover how gender relations shape — and are shaped by — the onset, dynamics, consequences, and aftermath of war. Inspired by Cynthia Enloe's invitation to be "curious feminists," we will explore why nation-states rely on patriarchal gender norms to wage war, how the consequences of war are distributed across genders, how wartime gender norms persist into peace, and ways to break the vicious cycle of violence and masculinities. Understanding these dynamics is essential for those who aim to end violence and transform gendered inequalities.
The class will be structured in four blocks. First, we will develop our "feminist curiosity" by engaging with foundational theoretical literature. Second, we will explore the gendered origins of violence, followed by an interrogation of the gendered dynamics of war and warfare. Finally, we will discuss the gendered aftermath of war and opportunities for resistance to violence.
Trigger warning: This class contains readings and discussions depicting (extreme forms of) violence. close
