This seminar will explore the political history of the Andean Republic, from Independence as Nueva Granada until the current failings to establish a Total Peace in Colombia. Readings will include the most seminal studies of the various periods in the country’s history. Particularly attention will be paid to consistent and persistent phenomena: constitutional democracy, civil conflict and violence, clientelistic structures and weak distribution of public goods. All of these phenomena are pertinent to Colombian politics, dating back, at least, to Independence. close
