SoSe 25: Economic Statecraft and Security
Jakob Hensing
Comments
Liberal perspectives on global politics have long expressed the hope that greater economic interdependence would foster international cooperation and peace. But under certain conditions, economic entanglements also enable the exercise of power and coercion. This is the domain of economic statecraft and security, which this seminar elucidates through conceptual discussion, an analysis of historical developments and experiences since the early 20th century, and a closer look at the contemporary use of key instruments (such as economic sanctions, the “weaponization” of nodes in global networks, or technology protection policies). While focusing primarily on the role of economically powerful states, the seminar also explores how the use of economic statecraft and security instruments affects countries often considered to be at the periphery of the international system, as well as the relationship between state and non-state actors.
