WiSe 24/25: Canadian and US Immigration Policies

(Im)migration has (again) become a hotly debated issue, not only in Europe but also in North America. While the US and Canada are still perceived as immigration countries par excellence (notwithstanding the bloody history as settler-colonial states), the respective approach to migration of these two countries is markedly different. This can be seen with regard to public policy (i.e. official immigration policy), public opinion and national identity (melting pot vs. cultural mosaic). This BA class will provide a brief history of immigration to Canada and the US but focus on the period since the 1970s. The course will include case studies on the southern (US-Mexico) and northern (US-Canada) border and also address different categories of immigration to North America. close
