Comments
The course is an introduction to historical and comparative linguistics, as applied to the Semitic languages. Students will be introduced to: (i) the description of the Semitic languages and their linguistic features; (ii) the comparison of these languages, in order to analyze the common characteristics. After a general outline of the Semitic languages (geographical distribution, historical aspects, writing systems), the course will highlight some comparative aspects of the phonology, morphology, and lexicon of the Semitic languages, while also addressing issues such as differences and commonalities of languages, typology, genetic relationship, and language contact. Reading and working material, such as academic articles dealing with the major language groups of Semitic and their linguistic features, will be provided during the course. close
