  Comments
This reading course accompanies the seminar on “The Formation of National Identities in the Middle East”. It is advisable but – depending on your study program – not necessarily compulsory to take both courses together. In this reading course, we will be working exclusively with Arabic sources, mainly from the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. We will focus on Arabic conceptualizations of the nation, as well as precursors and alternatives to it, such as local communities, religious communities, empire, or pan-Arab and pan-Islamic forms of political belonging and identity. Key terms include umma, sha?b, wa?an, milla, balad, ?uruba, or al-jami?a al-islamiyya. close
