WiSe 24/25: Sources to the Premodern Arabic Secretaries

Ingrid Austveg Evans

Comments

In this course, we will read a range of Arabic primary sources relating to premodern secretaries from the Abbasid to the Mamluk periods. These sources include the “advice to secretaries” literature (adab al-katib), sources relating to diplomatics and the composition of formal and informal letters (insha?), and biographical dictionaries (kutub al-tarajim, ?abaqat) detailing the lives and merits of individual secretaries. In addition to the edited material, students will also be introduced to the use of documentary sources in tracing the activities of the scribes. close
