What is a nation? What is nationalism? And what are the characteristics of nation-states? Although most of us can intuitively say something about these questions, their answers are notoriously difficult from a social and cultural perspective. Considering that most of our modern political communities legitimize themselves in the name of this or that nation, understanding these questions is even more important for modern global history. Therefore, this seminar focuses on the history of nations and nationalism from a global perspective. After an overview of various theoretical approaches to nationalism, the second part of the seminar will primarily focus on different case studies from the 20th century. Good English skills are required, the majority of texts will be in English, and the number of participants is limited to 30. close
