In this course, we will read primary sources in Arabic on the topics of book circulation, collection, production, and trade. We will study the associated debates on cultural heritage as they were conducted by both well-known intellectual figures of the time and lesser-known actors of book trade and book circulation. In addition to reading excerpts from edited sources, including early print editions, students will gain familiarity with reading manuscripts relating to book culture in the long nineteenth century. close
