A readiness to read primary sources and German- as well as English-language texts is necessary. Prerequisites for passing the seminar are continuous participation in reading and discussion as well as the completion of small written and oral assignments. Regular participation in the seminar is compulsory. close

Colonization and Christian missions are usually regarded as characteristics of (early) modern globalization processes of Europeans with respect to different parts of the world. However, it is often overlooked that colonization and mission also played an important role on the European continent between the 16th and 18th centuries: for example, in the political integration of peripheries into nascent states, in settlement projects, in the context of religious and confessional unification, etc. The seminar is dedicated to these and other aspects in various regional and thematic approaches. Among the topics to be discussed are the state-building processes in the British Isles, the effects of confessional policies in France and Central Europe, the development of Northern Europe by Denmark and Sweden, the Catholic missions in East-Central and South-East Europe, settlement projects in the Holy Roman Empire as well as in Russia and the Habsburg Lands, and the work of Catholic and Protestant groups (Jesuits, Pietists, Herrnhuters and Quakers) in Europe. The aim of the seminar is to reassess the relationship between religious and political developments in early modern Europe, including the effects of colonization and mission on the lives of early modern people. close
