Sensory history is a very dynamic field that is currently experiencing an enormous international upswing. From an anthropological point of view, the senses are part of human’s physical and affective disposition. However, their use, meaning and their bodily-affective experience vary culturally and historically, as social science, anthropological and historical research has emphasized in recent years. Moreover, we are faced with a fundamental heuristic problem when we deal with the senses in history, since actual perception (seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting) as an experience is no longer reproducible for historians. How can a "meaningful" history of the senses nevertheless be conceived?
In this Mater-Übung, the significance and function of all the senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch) in different secular and religious social contexts will be explored. The overarching question is aimed at the epistemological potential of the senses in the early modern period in order to be able to determine the respective added value of a history of the senses.
