Causal analysis has undergone major transformations and has led to an advancement in explanatory power of causal relations within quantitative data analysis. Despite the sharp increase of experimental methods, the analysis of survey data stays at the center of social science inquiry. The seminar aims at practically introducing methods that tackle the problems of testing causal statements with survey data. In the first part, we will discuss the main notions and instruments of this new way to think about causality and causal inference (e.g., front-door criterion, counterfactuals). In the second part of the seminar, we will apply statistical methods – such as fixed-effects regression, instrumental variables, difference-in-difference – by means of both (and mainly) Stata and also SPSS.
Participants should have basic knowledge in multivariate statistics and at least one of the two software packages. close
