Comments
In modern knowledge societies education has become a key factor not only for economic growth and prosperity but also as a vital resource for coping with the demands of a rapidly changing, globalized world. The National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) has been set up to find out more about how education is acquired, to understand how it impacts on individual biographies, and to describe and analyze the major educational processes and trajectories across the life span. The goal of this research placement is to enable students to conduct quantitative longitudinal analyses of educational transitions and trajectories using the NEPS. A special focus will be on analyses of school-to-work transitions, learning during adulthood, and social inequality. To achieve this, we discuss existing literature that uses the NEPS data and relevant theories. Students will develop research questions that can be answered using the NEPS data based on the literature and their general knowledge of sociological theories. For example, students may investigate the impact of migration background on school-to-work transitions and placement on the labor market. It is also possible to replicate existing analyses. To enable students to do this, we will provide an introduction to data management of longitudinal data (and especially the NEPS) using Stata. Also, we will introduce the students to state-of-the-art methods for analyzing longitudinal data such as event history models, fixed-effects regression, and sequence analysis. Basic knowledge of Stata and statistical methods for cross-sectional data analysis is a prerequisite. close
