Advanced seminar
WiSe 23/24: Outcomes of Social Movement Mobilization
Endre Borbáth
Comments
The seminar examines the outcomes of social movements along three dimensions: policy change, interactions with party politics, and the formation of political communities. Through a combination of presentations, readings, group work, and discussion, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the different ways in which social movements lead to incremental changes or sweeping reforms along each of these three dimensions. Topics covered include conceptualizing social movements, strategies of mobilization and organization, distinguishing different logics of influence, and examining the intervening role of contextual conditions, such as the institutional framework, the media system, and discursive opportunities. By the end of the seminar, students will be familiar with both classical and recent contributions to the field. They will also have a good understanding of the main quantitative methodological approaches to the study of social movement outcomes. The seminar assumes no prior knowledge of the literature on social movements and is designed for first semester MA students. close
