WiSe 23/24: State development in European and post-communist perspective
Mihai Varga
Comments
The class covers diverse topics in modern state development, from the role of wars and mass conscription to land reform, urbanization and capitalism in the creation of European nation states. We devote particular attention to contemporary theories about the diverging development of Eastern European states in comparison to states in Europe’s other parts; to how these theories mix with ideas of state retrenchment and anti-corruption under the neo-liberal paradigm; and to the present-day return to a “strong-state”-paradigm in much of post-communist Eurasia, with ideas of “hard government” and “national sovereignty” (Hungary, Poland), “power vertical” and “sovereign/managed democracy” (Kazakhstan, Russia) there to shape public debates and state development for the years to come. close
