WiSe 23/24: The Literature of Pre-Islamic and Early Islamic Iran
Khanna Usoyan
Comments
This course provides a systematic overview of the major groups of literary texts that have come down to us from the pre- and early Islamic eras of Iran. Corpora and genres covered include the Avesta, pre-Islamic inscriptional literature, Zoroastrian and secular Pahlavi, Manichaean, as well as Early and Classical New Persian literature. Each of these bodies of text is presented in the context of its specific social, religious and historical setting. Besides that, emphasis is also placed on continuities of genre and style as well as on links to neighbouring literary traditions. The different corpora are introduced and illustrated with short sample passages in English translation. Prior knowledge of any ancient or modern Iranian languages is not required.
This seminar is offered in collaboration with Dr. Benedikt Peschl.
