Media, Migration, and Cultural Citizenship: Post-colonial Perspectives

Migration has fundamentally shaped societies across history and is currently at the center of public debates. In this seminar, we will analyze the complex relationship between media practices, belonging, and migration through a comparative lens. To begin, we will draw on post-colonial theoretical concepts of Othering and cultural citizenship to describe how power is constructed through media to produce boundaries of “us” and “them” (Bhabha, 1990; Ong, 1996). Then, we will apply these concepts to research from migration and communication studies to answer questions such as: How have media systems historically been shaped by processes of (post-)colonial migration? How do different media offerings function to both provide and withhold cultural citizenship for migrant communities? How have digital media challenged boundaries of “us” and “them,” and how have they potentially reinforced these boundaries? After reflecting on and discussing the prior research, which has often been very Western-dominated, we will expand our perspective by viewing examples and practices from different global regions. close
