Seminar
Media and collective memory
Christina Haritos
Comments
The question of how we (don’t) remember the past is at the core of many current debates, for instance in the recent renaming of Anton-Wilhelm-Amo-Street in Berlin. This seminar will view these debates from the vantage point of communication studies, asking: How is collective memory produced and challenged through mediated communication processes? We will begin by looking at theoretical frameworks of collective memory and connecting them with research from communication studies. Then, we will apply and test our theoretical framework by looking at various case studies when past moments were commemorated or actively silenced in different media. In this part of the seminar, we will also consider how digital platforms are shaping processes of collective remembering. Throughout the course, students will be able to practice aspects of academic work, such as critical engagement with scientific literature, mapping the current state of research, presenting research findings and writing seminar papers. close
