Seminar
Gender and Social Media
Jo-Ju Kao
Comments
Social media plays a major role in how we express ourselves, interact with others, and perceive our own identities, particularly with regard to gender. It is also a space where society is reflected and constructed in ways that can both reinforce and challenge gender-related norms and inequalities. This course provides an introduction to the study of gender in the context of social media. We will explore how gender is performed, represented, and contested on social media across a range of topics, including, but not limited to, appearance, popular culture, health, sports, relationships, sexuality, representation, politics, and family, through readings, discussions, and group presentations. By the end of the seminar, students will have gained a broad understanding of the current state of gender and social media research and of how to approach gender-related issues on social media from a scientific perspective.
Note: This course will be conducted exclusively in English. All lectures, discussions, and assignments will be in English. Students are expected to engage with the course materials and participate in all course activities in English. close
