Comments
This seminar offers a hands-on introduction to R, the leading open-source statistical software in the social sciences, and to key quantitative methods for analyzing political attitudes and behavior. R is widely used in research because of its flexibility, reproducibility, and powerful visualization tools. Unlike proprietary software, R is free, community-driven, and constantly updated with cutting-edge techniques.
Starting with exploratory data analysis, students will learn to import, clean, summarize, and visualize political datasets. We will then progress to regression techniques (linear and logistic). Using data from large-scale surveys, voter turnout databases, and protest event datasets, the seminar will illustrate how quantitative methods can address key questions in political sociology, such as: Who participates in politics—and who does not? How do citizens form political preferences? How do voters make electoral choices? To what extent do elected officials respond to citizens? How do institutions and social contexts shape political behavior?
