Jüngste Debatten über Sex, Gender und wie wir darüber sprechen/Recent debates on sex, gender and how we talk about them

What is a woman? What is a man? Are transwomen women? What is a gender identity? These are all highly explosive questions. And they are highly relevant today: in the U.S., the persecution of trans people in the name of a biological conception of gender is high on Trump’s agenda. Rarely have metaphysical debates about gender and gender identities, as well as debates in the philosophy of language about how we assign gender to ourselves and others, been so politically charged. This makes it all the more important to discuss these questions in a nuanced and tolerant manner to prevent polarisation and ideological divisions. This seminar will focus on current philosophical research on these issues. Since it is often necessary to be familiar with certain classic texts in order to understand contemporary contributions, classic texts will frequently be paired with modern ones.
Readings will be in English, the discussion in class in German. close
