(HS 1) Religion and the Environment: Exploring Relationality Beyond the Human
Rosa Cordillera Castillo
Comments
What is the relationship between religion and the environment and how have anthropologists studied this? How do spiritual beliefs, cosmologies, and ritual practices shape, and are shaped by, people's relationships with the more-than-human world? We tackle these questions by drawing on works where the anthropology of religion, ecological anthropology, indigenous studies, and political ecology intersect. Themes include ritual, landscape, and environmental ethics; animism, perspectivism, and ontologies; religious environmentalism and ecospirituality; religion, capitalism, and the environmental crisis; indigenous resistance and environmental justice; and posthumanism and more-than-human agency. close
