Lecture
The American Renaissance Reconsidered
Stefanie Müller
Comments
Taking our cue from F.O. Matthiessen’s The American Renaissance (1941) and (ongoing) scholarly reassessments, we will look at the period between 1830 and 1870 in US-American literature as well as how it has been studied and interpreted by scholars in the field of American Literature. Our goal will be twofold: to learn more and gain a better understanding about this period of literary production as well as about our discipline and its practice of literary periodization.
This is a lecture class, not a seminar. If you want to participate and receive credits for it, please take note of the following conditions for participation:
1. Register on Blackboard for this class – this is where you will find further information as well as reading material.
2. The shopping period is limited to week one. You must commit to the class by our second meeting.
