Comments
This course will focus on historiography and the handling of historical texts. Ancient West Asian historiography forms a large text corpus with many sub-genres and a text corpus that was recorded on a large number of text mediums. The reading of some important historiographical texts will provide an opportunity to deal with questions about the forms and aims of ancient West Asian historiography, its text mediums, genres, modes of representation, narrative techniques and ways of dealing with sources.
Since many Mesopotamian historiographical texts have been preserved in several copies, the questions of how texts were transmitted and copied, how text variants were created and what types of text variants exist will also play a role. close
