“The Duties of the Heart”: Emotions and Feelings in Judaism between Tradition and the Present Day
Silvana Greco
Comments
In Jewish religion and tradition, emotions and affects are seen as an important part of human
nature and a crucial dimension of the human condition, and they're a big part of Jewish rituals
and holidays. The course focuses on the analysis of various emotions and affects in different
areas and historical periods of Jewish life from a historical-sociological perspective: love and
fear of God in the sacred texts of the Torah; aesthetic emotions and the emotional community
of writers in the present day; fear, anger, and shame in times of anti-Semitism (from the Shoah
to the present day); hope for the reconstruction of life in the diaspora after World War II up
to Israeli society. close
