The course offers a basic overview of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, i.e. the scientific study of the ancient Near Eastern cultures of the Ancient Near East, in particular Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Syria and Iran in the period from the 4th to the 1st millennium BC.
The most important writing and language systems (especially cuneiform script and the Sumerian, Akkadian, Hurrian and Hittite languages), central source genres (e.g. legal, administrative, literary and religious texts) as well as archaeological, historical and cultural contexts are covered.
The aim of the course is to impart basic specialist knowledge and to introduce students to the methods of text interpretation, source criticism and historical reconstruction.
