Content:
Students will also learn to dissect fresh flowers and study microtome sections to draw floral diagrams and formulas, and identify their different organs and functions to predict their pollination mode and reproductive biology and differentiate floral traits (1) that evolve independently by convergence in many unrelated lineages of flowering plants from those (2) that are potential synapomorphies of systematic interest and useful to recognize key flowering plant lineages and reconstruct their evolutionary trends and diversification. NOTE: Labs will include as often as possible a tour of the garden to collect fresh material studied in the class, and students who do not have dissecting tools will be provided with tweezers, needles, and razor blades. close
