The seminar “Ritual Scenes in the Temples of the Graeco-Roman Period” focuses on a textual and visual source from the first millennium BC – the ritual scenes in the temples of the Graeco-Roman period. More than 200 different scene types have been preserved on temple reliefs, depicting and describing ritual acts. These include, for example, sacrificial scenes (food, drinks, clothing, jewelry), purification scenes (water, incense), and scenes of enemy defense (turtles, crocodiles). The seminar focuses on selected scene types and their typological characteristics. Comparative analyses will be used to compare scenes of the same type from different temples, while narrative and structural connections between scenes within individual temple complexes will be examined in order to understand the decorative systematics. The goal is to understand cult programs as coherent, spatially specific contexts and to place them in their historical and religious context. A special focus is also placed on the reading of original texts, thus the seminar offers an introduction to Ptolemaic studies. The writing system of the late temple texts is presented with its characteristics and the texts are read and interpreted together. close
