Seminar
Dis:Integration. Whiteness, Gender, and the Politics of Belonging in Germany
Miriam Kurz
Comments
While “integration” remains a central term in public and political debates on migration and diversity in contemporary Germany, it appears to function rather as a mechanism of exclusion than one of inclusion. This interdisciplinary seminar critically interrogates the dominant integration paradigm in Germany through the lenses of intersectionality, gender, and critical whiteness studies. Rather than approaching integration as a neutral or inclusive goal, we will interrogate how integration discourses function to secure white national identity and marginalize those marked as migrants, Muslim, or Other.
This seminar addresses questions such as: Who is expected to integrate, and into what? What role do whiteness and “white innocence” (Wekker 2016) play in shaping societal norms in Germany and Europe? How are women’s and LGBTQ rights instrumentalized in nationalist discourse about belonging? Who is allowed to belong, and under what conditions? Analyzing these questions, we will also examine shifting discourses around skilled labor, deportation, and citizenship in Germany. We will engage with the particular ways in which Muslims are targeted by integration discourses and policies in Germany, exploring how white supremacy and Christian supremacy are entangled.
We will do close readings of academic texts, analyze public discourse, and engage with postmigrant, decolonial, and antiracist interventions that propose creative counter-narratives and frameworks for living together beyond integration.
