Comments
The far right is a global phenomenon not only because it forges concrete political networks worldwide, but also because it exhibits local characteristics that reflect global patterns. The most effective way to study such interconnected actors is through broad, collective research projects.
In this intensive practical seminar, students will learn how to analyze this global phenomenon by exploring the entangled dimensions through which it manifests (e.g., redistributive conflicts, gender, social media, religion, climate, etc.). These dimensions will be examined through empirical case studies from various regions (primarily, Latin America and Europe), thereby raising critical questions about how to develop analytical units and define spatial scales of observation that move beyond national frameworks. We will assess theoretical debates and qualitative methodological approaches that help make sense of the rapidly evolving constellations of right-wing parties, movements, think tanks and influencers. By identifying commonalities, differences and ambivalences from a global perspective, we aim to gain a deeper understanding of the contemporary right-wing upsurge.
Throughout the course, students will gain experience in designing and managing each phase of a collaborative research project—from conceptual discussions to the presentation of findings. They will also develop practical skills in organizing a public workshop with international experts in the interdisciplinary field of right-wing studies. close
