Excellent Research and Teaching

In 2007 Freie Universität Berlin won excellence status in the German government’s first Excellence Initiative competition for universities. This status was re-confirmed in June 2012, when the university won funding for its future development strategy, “Veritas- Justitia - Libertas. International Network University.” Since 2019, Freie Universität has been funded as part of the Berlin University Alliance in the Excellence Strategy competition organized by the German federal and state governments.

Many individuals studying, teaching, and conducting research at Freie Universität Berlin have won various awards for outstanding research, individual achievements, or prizes for their theses and dissertations.

Awards for Sustainability Measures

Freie Universität Berlin has received numerous awards for its efforts toward sustainability, including the International Sustainable Campus Excellence Award and the Paper Atlas competition for exemplary use of recycled paper. In addition, the university’s sustainability performance is recognized by top rankings such as the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking and the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking.

Recognition for Gender Equity and Family Friendliness

Freie Universität Berlin has a proud history of promoting gender equity: a Total-E-Quality rating since 2002; since 2005, one of the top universities in the nation-wide ranking conducted by the Center of Excellence Women and Science (CEWS); since 2007, certified as a “family friendly” university. In 2018, Freie Universität cofounded the association “Familie in der Hochschule e. V.” (Family at the University). The same year the university won the “Outstanding Equal Opportunity!” distinction for its strong professional development and recruiting processes that support female academics on their way to becoming professors.
