Best Practice

On this page we collect tools and methods that are provided at Freie Universität Berlin and in other places that can be useful for your open science routines.

Berlin OpenX Initiative

The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) OpenX initiative promotes Open Science in areas such as Open Access, Open Data, Open Review, Open Source, and Citizen Science. It supports researchers through training, networks, and Open Science ambassadors to establish open research practices. Additionally, policy initiatives and research projects are funded to strengthen Open Science in Berlin and beyond.

BIH QUEST Center for Responsible Research

The QUEST Center at the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) at Charité is dedicated to promoting transparent, reproducible, and responsible biomedical research. It develops and supports Open Science practices such as Open Access, Open Data, and Open Methodology to enhance research quality and integrity. Through training, consultation, and incentives, the QUEST Center helps researchers integrate Open Science into their daily work. Additionally, it pioneers innovative approaches to reform research assessment and advocates for a culture of transparency and collaboration in science.

Library Carpentry

Library Carpentry is a global community teaching software and data skills to people working in library- and information-related roles.

LMU's Open Science Toolbox

The Open Science Toolbox is designed to foster Open Science practices, thus helping to close the intention-action gap when it comes to put OS ideas into practice. It provides a collection of helpful links to tools and resources that researchers can use to make their research more transparent and reproducible. Researchers can browse for resources for every stage of the research process.

Open Science Policies Guide

The "Open Science Policies" guide by the Open Access Office Berlin supports universities and research institutions in developing and implementing Open Science strategies. Based on a five-stage policy cycle, it provides checklists and case studies from leading institutions. The goal is to integrate Open Science into research processes and promote collaboration and open knowledge sharing.

Publishing Policy of Human-Centered Computing Lab

The Human-Centered Computing (HCC) Lab is a research group at the Institute of Computer Science at Freie Universität Berlin. The HCC.lab's mission is to design computational systems that enable and augment collaboration between humans and machines. In order to ensure a maximum of openess and availabilty of its research findings the Lab has designed its own Publishing Policy.

The Open Science Training Handbook

In 2018, fourteen authors collaborated at the TIB – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library in Hannover to create an open, practical handbook for Open Science training. Designed to support educators and foster a cultural shift, the handbook provides techniques and strategies for delivering effective and engaging training on Open Science principles. Developed through a collaborative "book sprint," it serves as a key resource for building curricula, connecting trainers, and empowering the Open Science community to share knowledge and inspire others.

TU Delft Strategic Plan Open Science (2020-2024, 2024-2028)

The Open Science Programme 2020-2024 addressed barriers to knowledge sharing through innovative strategies for research, education, and collaboration. It emphasized academic recognition, partnerships, and skill development, setting a high standard for openness in academia.
Building on these foundations, the TU Delft Open Science Programme 2024-2028 integrates lessons learned and aligns with national and institutional policies. It prioritizes expanding open practices across faculties while leveraging TU Delft’s potential as an international leader. This initiative highlights the university’s commitment to excellence, collaboration, and inclusivity in advancing Open Science.
