How to Find a Potential PhD Supervisor at Freie Universität

Before you could get admission to doctoral studies at Freie Universitaet Berlin, you have to find a “Doktorvater” or “Doktormutter” - a professor who is an expert on the topic of your future dissertation and who would be willing to become your supervisor.

Generally speaking, every Professor, Junior Professor or "Privatdozent" of Freie Universität Berlin can supervise PhD students and could become your PhD supervisor.

Here are some suggestions on how you could proceed:

  • Develop some good ideas on the field of your future dissertation and research.
  • Check out the List of Open Positions currently offered to CSC candidates by Freie Universität Berlin and look for projects which match with your own research inerests.
  • If none of the projects in the list suits your interests, you can take a look at the research interests of individual professors. A good starting point for your search for a potential academic supervisor could be the List of Departments of Freie Universität Berlin. From the department you will usually pass to the level of individual institutes, divisions or disciplines. There you will find either a list of the research groups or a list of the research topics.
  • If you have identified a potential supervisor in one of the two previous steps, you will have to contact him or her. The most convenient way to do this, is via e-mail.
  • When contacting a potential supervisor by E-Mail, you should first introduce yourself as a Chinese student interested in PhD studies at Freie Universität Berlin and planning to apply to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for funding. After describing your ideas for doing research for a docotral thesis with the respective professor, you should briefly describe your previous research experience. You should also include a CV, a list of publications and information about your academic qualifications and degree (including transcripts).

Good luck!
