International Summer and Winter University FUBiS at Freie Universität Berlin Starts New Year with 142 Participants
Highest number of winter term participants since 2020
№ 002/2026 from Jan 07, 2026
The first term of the 2026 Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) program kicked off this week with participants from nearly twenty countries. Most of the students participating come from the United States, South Korea, and China. This term boasts the highest enrollment since the 2020 winter term, indicating that attendance numbers are returning to pre-pandemic levels.
Over the course of three weeks the participants will attend German language courses and a range of academic courses in English. The topics covered are highly diverse and run the gamut from law and political science, to sustainability and business, to the history of Germany under National Socialism. Students can choose between five different proficiency levels for their German lessons depending on their prior knowledge of the language. Freie Universität Berlin awards credits for all FUBiS courses according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which students can then have recognized at their home university.
Both language and subject courses utilize the city of Berlin as a resource for teaching and learning and actively incorporate it into the curriculum. In keeping with this extended classroom approach, excursions, tours, and guest lecturers form an integral part of the program. The FUBiS program also offers an exciting recreational program for all participants, including a visit to the Reichstag building and a day trip to Potsdam.
FUBiS is dedicated to providing a first-class, highly organized program and tailor-made support to participants. The program reinforces Freie Universität Berlin’s status as an international network university by maintaining partnerships with prestigious universities around the world.
The Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) program, which was launched in 2008, is offered three times per year and brings about 600 students from forty nations to Berlin over the course of its three terms. FUBiS places a particular emphasis on the importance of sustainability and aligns the program and its courses with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
