On Sunday, Freie Universität Berlin welcomed 337 students from thirty countries to its International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS). The FUBiS curriculum this term includes sixteen German language courses for all levels and seventeen subject courses on different academic topics. The subject courses taught in English cover a range of disciplines and issues. Students can choose from courses on politics, economics, or history as well as others that focus on art and architecture. There are also courses for students interested in analyzing philosophical works or music. In addition, issues like sustainability and transformation are options in the curriculum. FUBiS also cooperates with the Utrecht Summer School to offer international summer classes on European history and German art history. For these classes the students have the opportunity to take additional courses in Italy and the Netherlands.

For all the FUBiS courses, Freie Universität Berlin awards credits according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). The program integrates the city of Berlin into its curriculum as an “extended classroom” with a diverse series of excursions, where the city serves as the perfect backdrop for experiential learning. Alongside the academic curriculum, FUBiS presents participants with a host of optional leisure activities, including a boat tour on the Spree River and a guided tour of the Reichstag Building.

Participants also benefit from additional services within the program, such as help finding accommodation or mental health support. These resources provide all participants with assistance and guidance during the program, which is particularly important given their unique backgrounds.

The FUBiS Summer University was held for the first time in 1998, and in 2007 a winter term was added. FUBiS offers summer and winter programs lasting three to six weeks that are made up of German language lessons and a wide range of academic subject courses primarily conducted in English. Every year around 600 students from approximately forty countries come to Freie Universität Berlin as part of the FUBiS program. The goal of FUBiS is to help to create a global community of empowered individuals who will actively shape a better future. In this spirit, FUBiS ascribes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and continues to deepen its commitment to sustainability in the curriculum.
