The Politics of Beauty
International conference “Beauty and the State: Bodily Self-Making, Citizenship, and the Politics of Belonging” will be held at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin from July 19‒21, 2023
№ 162/2023 from Jul 12, 2023
What is the relationship between body image, beauty ideals, and state-level politics? This question will be the focal point of an international conference, “Beauty and the State,” held at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin. Taking place from July 19‒21, 2023, the conference will provide a framework in which researchers from across the globe can discuss the political dimensions of human bodies, perceptions of beauty, and beauty norms. For example, the question of why China is investing millions of dollars of public money in beauty pageants, salons, and training initiatives while, at the same time, censoring androgynous men on social media. The decolonization of beauty ideals in Brazil will also be a topic of discussion. The conference is being organized by Professor Claudia Liebelt and Anne Kukuczka, social and cultural anthropologists at Freie Universität Berlin. Those interested in attending the English-language conference can sign up using the following link: GKS@polsoz.fu-berlin.de. The conference is free to attend.
“Far from being simply ‘in the eye of the beholder,’ beauty is a morally laden and deeply social affair intricately linked to constellations of power, the imagination of boundaries, and normative regimes,” says Kukuczka. However, external appearances and idealized forms of beauty are not only influenced by trends and the media, but also by state institutions and political regulations.
What connections are drawn between our daily bodily practices, for example, going to the gym, and who is perceived to be a “good” citizen? And how do developments at the nation-state level influence local power dynamics and the spread of products, images, and technology that make up an increasingly globalized beauty industry? These are just some of the questions that will be critically discussed over the course of the conference. “We want to investigate the connections between (bio)political forms of government and the political aspects of beauty and the beauty industry, for example, how they are expressed in national parades or the physical appearance of state-sanctioned flight attendants,” explains Professor Liebelt.
The three-day conference forms part of the project “Aesthetic Citizenship: Formations of the Gendered Self and Imaginations of Urban Modernity” (2021‒2024), funded by the German Research Foundation.
