Africa and Asia as the Subjects of Interdisciplinary Discussion – International Conference

The 34th Deutscher Orientalistentag, organized by the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft (DMG), will be taking place at Freie Universität Berlin from September 12‒17, 2022

№ 141/2022 from Sep 05, 2022

The largest conference for Asian and African studies in the German-speaking world will be taking place at Freie Universität from September 12‒17, 2022. It is expected that 1,200 academics from 66 countries around the world will attend the 34th Deutscher Orientalistentag (DOT). The program encompasses 1,200 presentations and discussions from 23 different branches of research from the fields of Asian and African studies. The conference begins on September 12, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. in the Max Kade Auditorium, Henry Ford Building. As part of the opening event, Prof. Dr. Hermann Parzinger, president of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation), will give a keynote speech at 12:00 p.m. on the topic “Museum Island and the Humboldt Forum: Considering Central Berlin from a Cultural Perspective” (in German).

One of the main focuses of the conference will be digital humanities, which will also be the subject of a workshop and a comprehensive program of section keynotes. This will enable participants in the conference to discover current digital projects and enjoy a hands-on experience. All specialists are welcome to take part in the events that form part of the accompanying program. The languages of the conference will be German and English. The DOT is organized by Prof. Dr. Alberto Cantera (Iranian studies), Prof. Dr. Beatrice Gründler (Arabic studies), Prof. Dr. Eun-Jeung Lee (Korean studies), and Prof. Dr. Shabo Talay (Semitic studies). The project coordinator is Stefan Härtel (Iranian studies).

On Wednesday, September 14, 2022, Prof. Dr. Ronit Ricci from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem will deliver a public lecture on the topic “Islamization and Translation: A View from Indonesia” (in English). Professor Ricci currently holds the Sternberg-Tamir Chair in Comparative Cultures at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he teaches Asian studies and comparative religious studies.

The DMG was founded in 1845, making it the oldest association of German researchers in the fields of Asian and African studies. The DOT is one of its main events. The conference was held for the first time in Leipzig in 1921; since then, it has taken place every three to five years. This year, the 34th DOT represents the 100th anniversary of this unique academic conference. Having already hosted the conference once in 1980, Freie Universität Berlin has the honor of hosting the DOT during this notable milestone.

“Berlin is an ideal venue for the Deutscher Orientalistentag, as the range of cultural studies subjects that are taught here is unparalleled in Germany. This multiplicity makes a considerable contribution toward how culture is understood in this diverse city,” says Shabo Talay, professor at the Seminar for Semitic and Arabic Studies at Freie Universität Berlin.

The DOT includes events from diverse specialist subjects such as Egyptology and Coptology; Arabic studies; the Christian Orient; digital humanities; Indo-European studies; Indology and southeast Asian studies; Iranian studies; Islam in Europe; Islamic studies; Japanology; Jewish, Hebrew, and Old Testament studies; Caucasus studies; Korean studies; manuscript studies; material culture, art history, and archaeology; the politics, history, economy, and society of the Middle East; Semitic studies; Sinology; southeast Asian studies; Turcology and Ottoman studies; and central Asian studies.
