Public history, which lies at the intersection between history as an academic subject and public engagement with the past, will be the key focus of an international conference to be held from August 16–20 at Freie Universität Berlin and other venues throughout the German capital. The sixth World Conference of the International Federation for Public History (IFPH) will see around 300 participants discuss new methods of conveying history at museums and historical sites; historical and political controversies between democracy and authoritarianism; and postcolonial perspectives on cultures of remembrance. The conference will open on August 16, 2022, at the asisi Panorama DIE MAUER near Checkpoint Charlie, with a speech from Prof. Dr. Verena Blechinger-Talcott, Executive Vice President of Freie Universität Berlin. The event will be held in English and is open to the public. Prior registration and a participation fee are required.

One event that will take place during the IFPH is a panel discussion on the television series “Babylon Berlin.” This will be held at 7:00 p.m. on August 19, 2022, in the Max Kade Auditorium, Freie Universität Berlin. Journalist and writer Marion Brasch will be moderating the panel, while Henk Handloegten, who is one of the series’ three directors, film scholar Bettina Köhler, and historian Dr. Hanno Hochmuth will discuss historical depictions in film and literature. The event will also provide the audience with a glimpse behind the scenes of the fourth season of the series, which has not yet aired. Participation in the panel discussion is free and no registration is required.
