№ 027/2022 from Mar 11, 2022
On March 15, 2022, an online panel discussion hosted by the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)” will address European and global perspectives on Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Seven scholars from China, Europe, India, and Ukraine will describe, explain, and discuss diverging European and global perspectives with regard to the attack by Russia, as well as possible consequences for the international liberal order. The English-language event can be followed via livestream.
In an extraordinary session of the German parliament on February 27, 2022, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) emphasized in his speech on the Russian invasion of Ukraine that we are living through a turning point in history, a so-called Zeitenwende. According to experts, Russia’s attack is not only threatening Ukraine’s sovereignty; it is also endangering and changing the European and international order that emerged after the end of the Cold War.

Information about the SCRIPTS Cluster of Excellence
The Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)” is a research consortium that analyses the contemporary controversies about the model of liberal democracy and the market economy from a historical, global, and comparative perspective. The term “liberal script” relates to a set of ideas and institutional prescriptions about how society is organized based on the core principle of individual self-determination. The main purpose of SCRIPTS is to understand why the liberal model of order has fallen into crisis despite its political, economic, and social achievements.
In operation since 2019, SCRIPTS is hosted by Freie Universität Berlin and unites eight major Berlin-based research institutes. SCRIPTS is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) until the end of 2025 as part of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. The directors of SCRIPT are Prof. Dr. Tanja A. Börzel (Freie Universität Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Michael Zürn (Freie Universität Berlin and WZB Berlin Social Science Center). The research teams are made up of scholars from the social sciences and area studies. In the areas of research and knowledge exchange, SCRIPTS works with research institutions throughout the world as well as with knowledge exchange partners from politics, culture, and society. In addition, SCRIPTS brings renowned visiting scholars from all over the world to Berlin.
