Professor of Innovation Management Carsten Dreher at Freie Universität’s School of Business and Economics has been appointed to the European Innovation Council (EIC) Board. He is one of twenty board members who advise the EIC on strategic planning and innovation policy pertaining to future-oriented areas of development in Europe, such as digital innovation, health, environmental transformation, according to the European Commission in Brussels. The EIC has harnessed the various innovation policy activities into the European funding program “Horizon Europe.” The European Union has granted the program 10.5 billion euros from structural funds as well as an additional 3.5 billion euros from Covid-19 recovery funds. The budget is scheduled to end in 2027. The members of the board traveled to the EIC summit in Brussels on November 24 and 25 to kick off their activities. The members were appointed for a term of two years, which can be extended twice. The new EIC Board replaces the pilot advisory board that ushered in the EIC’s strategy and its implementation.

Professor Carsten Dreher, born in 1962, has conducted research and teaching at Freie Universität Berlin since 2009. He studied industrial engineering and occupational training at the Technical University of Karlsruhe. He began his career as Junior Research Fellow with the European Commission in the Forecasting and Assessment in Science and Technology (FAST) unit. From 1989 to 2006 he worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), where he was in charge of the division responsible for analyzing industrial innovation behavior. After receiving his doctorate from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 1996, he spent time as a visiting scholar at the Industrial Performance Center at MIT in Boston in 1997. In 2006 he became Joint Professor for Innovation Research and Innovation Management at the University of Flensburg and at the Mads Claussen Institute for Product Innovation and Syddansk Universitet, Denmark. The center was instrumental in advising and supporting the university’s Executive Board as it prepared for the first round of the competitive Excellence Initiative and developed its research focus areas. His research interests include analyzing technology dynamics, using foresight instruments for developing long-term innovation strategies and mechanisms, as well as studying the impact of public research and innovation policies on the innovation behavior of companies.
