Preparatory Courses for Refugees at Freie Universität

Applications are being accepted between April 30 and June 30 / Weekly online information events as of June 08

№ 102/2021 from Jun 03, 2021

Refugees interested in studying at Freie Universität Berlin are invited to submit applications online between April 30 and June 30, 2021, to attend language and preparatory courses at the university. The courses are offered as part of the Welcome@FUBerlin program. To be eligible to apply, individuals must be registered in Berlin or Brandenburg as recognized refugees, and they must have a higher education entrance qualification that is recognized in Germany. Applications are to be submitted via the uni-assist portal for the program “Deutsch und Vorbereitungskurse für Geflüchtete – Welcome@FU.” The application is free of charge. To qualify for participation, refugee students must have German language skills at the A2 GER level (for the German courses) and B1 GER level (for the preparatory courses). The program will begin in September and will run for two semesters. As of June 8, on Tuesdays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., there will be four multi-language online information events about the program and the application procedure.

The Welcome@FUBerlin program was set up in 2015 by Freie Universität Berlin to support refugees in Berlin and Brandenburg to begin studying at the university or to continue an interrupted degree program. More than 100 refugees participate in the Welcome@FUBerlin program annually. The program is sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Senate of Berlin.

In addition to the German language classes and the preparatory courses, the Welcome@FUBerlin program offers a Guest Study Program for Refugees. As part of this program, refugees can attend selected courses from the university free of charge. If the instructors agree, it is possible to earn formal certificates of credit for the coursework. These certificates would then be eligible for credit as part of a later degree program. The Welcome@FUBerlin also offers an online tutorial, where students already attending Freie Universität can meet participants in the Welcome@FUBerlin programs to discuss topics relating to studying and getting started at the university. There are also courses offered by the University Sports Center.
